Sitting down at Bang! is like taking a time-machine trip back to the early '90s -- to the days before comfort food and California cuisine devolved into parodies of themselves. The restaurant is cute, but not sickeningly so, with its odd back entrance, high tables and giraffe-leg chairs that make everyone feel like a kid sitting at the grownups' table. The floor staff is laid-back and competent, and the food is honest, well-executed American fare juiced up with a little creativity and a lot of heart.
How do you feel about eating in public? How about eating in public with a bunch of strangers while onlookers examine your personal eating habits? That's what artist Tsehai Johnson is asking people to... More »
While the kidlets are stuck with chicken tenders and mac and cheese, the comfort mavens at Bang!, 3472 West 32nd Avenue, debuted some new grub last week for more roving palates. We've been loving on... More »
The apple pie from Bang! (3472 W. 32nd Avenue), which won first place in a recent pie competition at Steve's Snappin' Dogs, is a thing of beauty, with its thin slices of apple stacked between two gol... More »
Comfort food is dead. I keep hoping that if I say that enough, it will actually come true. Comfort food should be pronounced dead, because it's gone as far as it can go in the white-tablecloth-and-heavy-silver restaurant cosmos. It's a horse... More »
It's just before 5 p.m., but already cars have been sitting out front for nearly half an hour. In the storefront window, the chefs are clearly visible, rolling and kneading, peeling and chopping, stirring and frying. But those who've been... More »
Best meat-loaf I've had in a long time.
Great place in the Highlands. They have a great little patio in the back.
Love the little cans of Sofia! The mussels were awesome!
When the world's going to hell in a handbasket, you'll find us at Bang!, drowning our sorrows in the tangy, beef-rich homemade gravy that comes slathered over Bang!'s juicy meatloaf, a your-mama-never-made-it-like-this gourmet version with plenty of intense seasonings and none of the gristle often found in ground beef. The mashed potatoes (more gravy, please!) and sautéed spinach that come with the hefty slice add to the plate's comforting capabilities. For a warm-and-fuzzy finale,... More »
When owners Cissy Yin and Jeff and Chris Oakley closed the original Bang! last fall, their faithful customers hardly knew what to do with themselves. Fortunately, the popular Highland eatery reopened less than a month later in a space across the street, this time with a liquor license, table service and a bit more space. Now serving dinner only, the charming eatery -- yeah, it's a little strange going down the alley and in through the back door, but you'll get used to it -- has expanded its... More »
While this bustling north Denver joint continues to attract new customers drawn by its downhome cooking and refreshingly simple concept, a base of regulars comes for one thing, and one thing only: Bang!'s incredible hamburger. It's hard to say which is more amazing, the roll or the meat, but both are given special treatment, resulting in a superlative burger. The kitchen bakes the soft, faintly sweet buns every day, using a Swedish oatmeal recipe that Bang! got from a Junior League cookbook;... More »
