A historic diner that was made by a grain-bin manufacturer, a community hub on the edge of legendarily community-lite downtown, a grill-and-go diner run by the name-brand chef who put Café Solo on the map-the Band Box has more contradiction about it than any other 24-seat diner in the state. But if you stop by and try one of chef and co-owner Brad Ptacek's expertly griddled burgers, or his made-from-scratch crisp American fries, you'll be loving the contradictions. Like how the bottomless cup of joe comes from a neighbor's family farm-back in Africa. How the homiest, oldest fashiondest diner around is walking distance to the futuristic nowhere of the Metrodome. How the "baby burger" is there to teach a new generation of Americans what there is to celebrate about the Midwest. And how every offering in this cathedral of the most classic classics seems as old as time, and as fresh as the lettuce on your baby's baby burger.
Hidden in the Elliot Park neighborhood of downtown Minneapolis, Bandbox Diner is a relic from another time. It was built during the 1930s by a man named Harry Wyman and his wife, Bert, as a local alternative to burgeoning fast-food chains like White Castle. At one time there were 15 of them around the Twin Cities, but this is the only one that has survived, and it was designated a historic landmark in 2000 by the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission. We're quite glad that Bandbox has... More »
We went far and wide searching for the best burger. We traveled the highways, the byways, and even the skyways, hunting for a burger with great flavor and also great spirit. We tried burgers stuffed with foie gras, burgers filled with molten cheese, burgers as soft as cream cheese, burgers made from cows with elaborate provenance and pedigree. But no matter where we looked, the burger that kept appearing in our mind's eye was the Band Box's humble, all-American "baby burger"--so we went back... More »
American as apple pie? Hey, how American is that? Even the French have tarte Tatin. You want American, try this: In the shadow of downtown sits the Band Box, a rail-car-diner made by a grain-bin manufacturer--the place is so significantly Americana, it's a registered historic landmark. More American than that, though, is the crew that cooks and runs it, with their punk-rock hearts, communitarian spirit, and fancy restaurant training (the chef and co-owner, Brad Ptacek, led the kitchen at... Like so many senior citizens, the Band Box recently had a little age-defying work done. After being shut down for three months, the nearly 70-year-old Elliot Park staple reopened with its capacity doubled (from one dozen patrons to two!) and its greasy-spoon charm still intact. Right now the place looks like it's been dunked in bleach, but the smell of meat and onions on an open grill promise the walls and ceiling won't stay white forever. Diner purists need not fear; the joint is still so... More »
Chuck Berry's classic "Back in the USA" celebrates a return from foreign lands that, among other things, lack diners "where hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day." No question Chuck would dig the Band Box. The resilient, funky, cramped Elliot Park neighborhood landmark offers six counter seats with a grill view, and four small tables. Two eggs, American fries, and toast will set you back $3.25 for breakfast; for lunch, you can get one of the habit-forming Band Box burgers for... More »
