Description

If you can overlook the awkward design that puts the stage right by the front door and leaves just a narrow path to the back seating area, this Lakewood hole in the wall is a great place to catch live jazz almost every night. While the club has a repeating weekly schedule of musical acts, you never know who might climb up on stage to guest-improv for a song or two with that night's band. Drinks are pricier than one might expect from such a dark, homey bar, but the selection of liquors, beers and wines is well-chosen.

Is it a blues bar or a jazz bar Does it matter The music isn't the best thing about The Balcony Club; the musicians are. The bands that play this old Lakewood dive aren't exactly spring chickens. No, they're professional, and they've been doing this for years, thank you very much, so they'll play what they want. Oh, and they're good. Or good enough, at least to the point where The Balcony Club has remained a favorite despite its slightly off-the-beaten-path location (up the stairs next to... More »

If we know anything at the Observer, it's where to take a date on the cheap and still make a good impression. The Balcony Club is such a place. Located above the Lakewood Theater, The Balcony Club is a smooth little gin joint complete with cozy, dark booths and wood-grained décor. Candlelight gives the bar just the right mood, and jazz music is always wafting through the air. The drinks are strong, good and cheap, and the waitstaff is courteous. If you can't score after taking someone... More »

"Big" Al Dupree sings and plays the piano. Very well. From his low perch in front of a piano, Dupree's soft jazz and gentle blues captivate the crowd at The Balcony Club an average of five nights a week, joined by eager Dallas musicians who want to play with the great one. Their eagerness is understandable--in his time, Dupree played with the likes of "T-Bone" Walker, Pee Wee Crayton, and Ike Turner. Dupree is a true Dallas native, born in 1923 and playing in clubs here off and on since he... More »

But it's probably that very location that allows the place to keep its rustic, time-worn charm.
