Mulberry Street used to mean suffering through bland penne alla vodka or lackluster veal Marsala. But now it"s an oasis for omnivores, in part thanks to Balaboosta, Einat Admony"s lively and unpretentious Mediterranean bistro whose name means "the ideal housewife" in Yiddish. At Balaboosta, patatas bravas, traditionally a Spanish dish served with a tangy tomato-based sauce, gets a Israeli makeover. Einat Admony fries chunk of spuds to a deep golden brown, then douses them in zaa'tar (a spice blend containing hyssop, thyme, and sesame) and serves them with a creamy roasted garlic aioli. Think of them as the chosen fries. 214 Mulberry Street, 212-966-7366, balaboostanyc.com More »
