Description

Bakeman's is a subterranean cafeteria on Cherry Street known mainly for its homemade meatloaf sandwiches and Soup Nazi demeanor of its longtime proprietor, Jason Wang. The meatloaf is fairly rudimentary: The beef is pressed until smooth, and seasoned with a mix of spices that taste something like onion soup mix. Made fresh each morning, it has a slightly sour flavor that calls out for ketchup. Seated on house made white bread with a plug of lettuce shreds, the meatloaf has a blue-collar appeal that helps the basement cafeteria sell hundreds of sandwiches every weekday.

All Purpose Pizza "Kid-friendly" is a hyphenated poison pill for many restaurants. Especially ones that, with some pies going for nearly $30, clearly cater to the well-heeled crowd at the tippy-toe of the Jackson Street corridor. But don't let tha... More »

A GOOD SANDWICH is a humble creature. It knows its place yet is confident of our affections; it has no need of regular praise. A sandwich provides the comfort of familiarity, like Granny's lap. On your first day at school, a sandwich says, "Don't ... More »
