Description

Although this 22-year-old chain has shuttered locations in several larger U.S. cities, its franchised restaurants—some 250 of them—continue the company pledge: No microwaves, no can openers, no freezers, no lard and no MSG, ever. Fast food chains have stressed fresh ingredients before, but Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, founded in Newbury Park, California in 1990, was the first to eschew processed ingredients and canned refried beans in favor of whole foods. Spicy Tex-Mex standards like Fire-Grilled Chicken Tortilla Soup and the usual list of burritos and bean-and-cheese bowls are all a cut above standard drive-through fare.
