Perhaps the best place in the Valley to go for Middle Eastern groceries, this Central Phoenix market features aisles filled spices, olive oils, freshly made pita bread, produce, and meats. As far as non-perishables go, there's a wide array of compact discs by Middle Eastern musical acts and an impressive selection of hookah pipes and shish (flavored tobaccos). If you're hungry after shopping, be sure to pop into the market's in-house eatery, Al Hana, for shish taook and delicious shwarma sandwiches.

Baiz Market isn't just the best Mediterranean market in Phoenix -- it's one of the most unique markets in the entire Phoenix area, and it's especially appealing to those with a taste for imported and ethnic foods. The store specializes in Middle Eastern as well as Mediterranean foods and caters to immigrants from countless countries. One side of a long aisle is devoted to spices of all kinds, including many varieties of cardamom, caraway seeds, chili peppers, cumin, fenugreek, mace,... More »
Need to stock up on charcoal squares and apple-flavored tobacco for your hookah? Head to Baiz Market, on 20th Street in Phoenix. The mid-size grocer is your connection for all things Middle Eastern and then some. They sell rose water, fig jam, and halawa. There's a halal meat counter that meets Islamic dietary standards, and a sweets display showing off rows of gooey baklava and pistachio burma pastries. The small aisles are overflowing in a rainbow of lentils, pita bread, and jars of... More »
We'd always thought that enough aimless driving would lead us to the best shopping finds in Phoenix, but it took a good friend to clue us in to the city's finest destination for Middle Eastern food. Baiz Market is one spot we never would've stumbled upon, because it's tucked in a quiet neighborhood north of Van Buren Street. Now that we've found it, we don't know how we ever got by without this oasis of imported ingredients, from nuts and spices to more kinds of cooking oil than we knew... More »
It's hard to shop for groceries on an empty stomach, so we're glad we can fill up on tabbouleh, kebabs and shish taook (grilled chicken) before hitting the aisles at Baiz Market. Once you've found the place (off the beaten path, just north of Van Buren), it's hard to miss the in-house restaurant, tucked into a corner near the front of the store, with a wood-fired oven, counter service, and a scattering of tables for eat-in customers. From there, we like to relax and nibble on hummus and... More »
Thank goodness for word of mouth, because Baiz Market -- discreetly nestled between the I-10 and a housing complex -- is not the kind of place we'd likely stumble upon. Even at that, it's not too far off the beaten path, and it's certainly worth a visit on those days when only a piping hot platter of chicken shawarma or shish kebab will satisfy our rumbling bellies. Along with speedy counter service for lunch and dinner, Baiz packs in every conceivable necessity for cooking Middle Eastern a... More »
Until a long-established Phoenician friend of ours from Jordan turned us on to it, we had no idea that one of the best Middle Eastern grocery stores in the Valley was right under our noses. Like a small, shimmering oasis, Baiz (pronounced "bays") Market appears out of nowhere, a nondescript white 1950s building in the middle of a quiet residential area between Van Buren and Jefferson streets, with painted signs in English humbly identifying it as a bakery, grocery and meat market. But enter... More »
