Badass Jazz with Shelley Carrol Recommended

  • Description

Some jazz clubs in Dallas offer live music on the weekends; most of the better ones serve it up every night. But Amsterdam, a coffee house in Exposition Park, beats the competition even though it hosts live jazz only on Mondays. Still, there's more than a quality-to-quantity ratio involved in this one. To us, jazz isn't about pristine tablecloths, expensive martinis and a bunch of old farts sitting around and ignoring the music. The best jazz is the stuff made in dark, casual clubs like New Amsterdam, where local players as hot as Shelley Carroll and (on occasion) Earl Harvin set up on the floor in front of the bathrooms and improvise some of the best bop-era jazz in town. On occasion, the tunes get rough--after all, the floor is open to all brass-wielders--but cheap martinis, lounge seating and a chill atmosphere make up for the occasional weak sax solo.

Jazz can be fine in a jacket and tie, but it feels at home in the Amsterdam's relaxed, eclectic environment. The quartet - Shelley Carrol on tenor sax, flute, and voice, Dave Zoller on keys, Jonathan Fisher on bass and Andrew Griffith on drums - is more than enough to keep things interesting. Their repertoire is so broad and deep that every Monday has a unique flavor.

On top of that is the wealth of talent Shelley brings in. The flavor-of-the-week could be swing, big band, New Orleans, funk or a tribute - just based on who in the North Texas jazz scene is available. It's always good, and sometimes it's extraordinary!

The venue is perfect too! The Amsterdam is comfortable and feels timeless; like it was somehow "meant to be". Monday night's crowd is a smorgasbord - from hipsters to old jazzers - and it works beautifully. Lots of regulars, lots of people in the door for the first time. Very chill. Very friendly. Step out to the large patio for conversation or a smoke.

Two sets, starting 10ish and midnight. Worth dropping in every week to enjoy the music and people.
