Mountain-size salads and a wealth of sturdy, consistently fresh and vibrant foods keep Barnaby's in business. Smoked chicken tostadas with roasted corn salsa delights, and the chicken pesto salad sandwich with artichoke hearts is remarkable. The meat loaf with garlic mashers is comfort food at its most, um, comforting. And the many burger combos, accompanied with a hearty stack of perfectly crisp french fries (or subbed with steamed veggies), will satisfy even the most finicky of eaters. Get in early to avoid long waits.
This weekend, the city once again hit the Press-organized Haute Wheels food truck festival. Like last year, the trucks that inspectors visited did pretty well. Chilantro BBQ got hit with two violati... More »
A few weeks ago when my list of the Top 10 Chocolate Chip Cookies in Houston ran on EOW, a few readers protested the absence of Baby Barnaby's chocolate chip cookie from the list. Eric Sandler of Eat... More »
In 2010, I had a grand ol' time scouring Houston for outstanding pumpkin dishes. One year later I'm older, definitely not wiser, and still in love with orange squash. So from now until Thanksgiving ... More »
The new management at Baby Barnaby's (602 Fairview, 713-522-4229) has brought about several changes. From the pink walls and colorfully striped ceiling to the flat-screen TV and satellite radio, there are a lot of things for fans of this cozy... More »
Although any one of the four Barnaby's locations will offer you unrivaled service, the original location -- tucked away in a residential area in Montrose off Fairview -- still sets the bar. Despite long waits on weekends and occasionally cramped quarters inside (especially when you're dining at Baby Barnaby's next door), the waitstaff are never anything short of charming and gracious. Between complimenting your hairstyle, telling your grandmother how glorious she looks today,... More »
Don't be fooled by the somewhat decrepit facade of this Montrose breakfast haven. It seems the owners of this gay-owned Montrose staple decided to forgo the manscaping and instead focus on the classic American cuisine, delicious fresh-squeezed juices, on-the-case staff and affordable prices. After all, it's what's inside that counts, right? A welcoming rainbow flag in the window beckons patrons, who wait for a table on the patio and cruise the LGBT scene before heading in for comfort food in... More »
Celebrating its tenth year this December, Barnaby's is a landmark in the Montrose. Named in memory of principal owner Jeffrey Gale's beloved sheepdog, the restaurant is adorned with cute images of the pooch. And the menu, consisting primarily of good ol' fashioned comfort food, reflects the people of the neighborhood itself: simple with an eccentric flair. Normally we wouldn't think of ordering meat loaf at a restaurant, but here the dish is so good (especially with the mashed potatoes) that... More »
Breakfast is not our favorite meal, because it happens to fall in the morning, which is our least favorite time of the day. But whenever we order the huevos rancheros at Baby B's, we are overcome with joy. Just thinking about this makes our mouths water. A friend of ours flew in from London wanting nothing more than runny eggs, beans and square-diced potatoes. This is the best breakfast ever. The small diner is located right next door to Barnaby's Cafe and is open only for breakfast. The... More »
