Over Aziza's lifespan, the restaurant has undergone a quasi-mystical metamorphosis: What started out as San Francisco's best Moroccan restaurant, serving refined versions of classic salads and tajines, has turned into one of the city's best restaurants, period. Chef-owner Mourad Lahlou has embraced many of the techniques and aesthetics of modernist cuisine, but infused them with warmth and complex spicing. Long-simmered stews have evolved into precise stripes of sauce, artfully poached vegetables, and meats whose uniform pinkness identifies them as having been cooked sous-vide. Melissa Chou's desserts are of a piece with the savory food, and the cocktail list reads like a mixologist's oxy-addled scribblings -- but the drinks themselves unexpectedly work.

one of my fav restaurants in SF
Although Aziza exhibits most of the classic Moroccan-restaurant characteristics, it isn't your typical North African hangout. Sure, there are belly dancers, and the hand-washing ritual, and the deal where the waiter pours the mint tea into your cup from three feet up in the air. But brothers Khalid and Mourad Lahlou (Khalid has since left) created a venue in which the foods of their native Marrakech are touched with fresh new flavors and accents. Hummus is flecked with sun-dried tomatoes;... More »
For the past few years, naming the best new restaurant in San Francisco has been difficult. High-end projects popped up faster than we could review them -- Fifth Floor! Gary Danko! Elisabeth Daniel! Azie! Now, in these leaner times, the newcomers have become a lot less ambitious. Even the names (Grub, Bloo, Night Monkey?) aren't as catchy. Still, don't let that detract from our praise of Aziza. After closing their highly rated Kasbah in San Rafael, brother act Mourad and Khalid Lahlou opened... More »
