Millions of scenes ago, AvantGarden was called the Mausoleum, and then the converted house went through a variety of structural and aesthetic changes to become the folkie playground it is today. Local singer-songwriters' acoustic jangle routinely packs the house as listeners sip Shiners, Merlot or the venue's trademark fruit-infused homemade concoctions. (Try the sangria.) Many of Houston's best-known troubadors count AvantGarden as the first venue they ever played in front of a large audience, either in the upstairs performance space or downstairs among the fireplace, mirrored walls and European-style divans. Something interesting, if not downright captivating, is happening here most nights of the week - regular tango, jazz, and open-mike nights (both music and comedy), to name just a few.

Whether you pick blues on a six-string or spin dance records on the decks, Helios will give you a place to perform. The rambling converted three-story house on lower Westheimer has a total of three performance areas: There are stages upstairs, downstairs and one outdoors for special occasions. On any given night you might find erotic poets, belly dancers, hip-hoppers, rockers, mods, hippies, punks and goths, or any combination thereof. Best of all, virtually every band there is local. Owner... More »
If all you want is a few minutes in front of a working microphone, this odd little venue has nearly cornered the market on the open-mike night. Their weekly 8:30 p.m. Wednesday slot has hosted everyone from Native American poet Soldier Blue to the "Gay Poet Laureate" Howard Mikehael, and was the platform that sent the Houston Poetry Slam Team off to the national competition in Minneapolis. The reading is followed by its bawdier counterpart, the O.P.P. poetry open mike at 11, where you'll... More »
