The story goes that, late in 1978, Boston businessman Louis Kane stumbled upon a display of French bakery ovens. Thrilled by the smell of fresh-baked bread, he bought one of the ovens and launched a bakery-cum-lunch-stand that quickly grew into an international chain of more than 250 Au Bon Pain cafés, including locations in Kuwait, Japan, Thailand, and, of course, New York, where Voice Places is your directory for local dining. State-of-the-art breads and croissants are the name of the Au Bon Pain game, which features healthy choices (the Roasted Mayan Chicken Harvest Rice Bowl, for example) and classic, French-bakery-inspired treats like the grab-and-go Chicken Pomodoro Sandwich. Authentic artisan breads are available by the loaf or as the wraparound for a sandwich from the hot lunch bar. Nutrition kiosks, posted every couple of feet, allow customers to find the information they need to make dietary choices, and gluten-free desserts and breads are also available.
