Since moving from the quieter stretch of Manchester that is downtown Maplewood, Atomic Cowboy has transformed itself from a coffee shop/art gallery/smoke-free DJ lounge to a smoke-free bar/Tex-Mex joint/art gallery/espresso bar. The transformation may not look drastic on paper, but in person it plays out dramatically. Exposed-brick walls and funky décor give off a rustic, open, welcoming feel. The menu isn't groundbreaking -- solid shredded pork tacos, fish tacos, piles of greasy-good nachos, a kicky quartet of buffalo chicken sliders -- but it sure is tasty grub. All the more so when it's midnight, you're buzzing on "super premium" margaritas and you need to shove some tasty calories down your piehole, pronto.

Fun place - sometimes has a band or a tarot reader. Nice patio outside with fire pit. Lots of fun!
With the coming workweek weighing heavy on your mind, Sunday night can be a downer. Perhaps an ice-cold can of Stag beer would brighten your mood? What if it only cost 50 cents? What if it were served at one of the most idiosyncratic watering holes in town? (Admit it: We had you at "50 cents.") Atomic Cowboy may be the hardest-workin' bar in St. Louis -- who else's calendar boasts such a nonstop frenzy of swing dancing, stand-up comedy, burlesque shows, DJs and bands? And Sunday's no... Open-mic nights are a gamble, no matter which side of the mic you're on. As a performer you're laying bare your songcraft and hoping the audience applauds; as a listener you have to contend with this songcraft-baring and hope it goes down easy. This tension is nicely dissipated at the Atomic Cowboy's open mic, held each Monday. Helmed by the easy-going Ryan Spearman, a fine bluegrass guitar and banjo picker in his own right, this laid-back night attracts the usual singer-songwriters, as well... More »
Any place can make a good cocktail, but Atomic Cowboy is expert at serving up cool cocktails. The surroundings certainly help: This bar's interior and exterior decorating elements -- vintage furniture and exposed brick indoors and the Quonset hut and fire pit out back -- work together to set quite a scene for all manner of fun and ballyhoo, from live bands to outdoor festivals and from burlesque acts to weekly comedy nights. Even if it's not comedy night, the junior high kid in all... More »
In most Southwestern states, standard rules of decorum mandate that certain topics should not enter polite discussion. No talking about religion. No arguing about politics. And, for the love of all that is good and holy, no boasting about your margarita recipe. Here in the Midwest, we're free from that final stricture -- so we can shout from the hilltops that Atomic Cowboy has the finest dang margarita in town. The only bad thing about ordering a margarita at the Cowboy is having to... More »
In a world where the term "sexual" is combined with just about any prefix--hetero, homo, bi, trans or metro--Atomic Cowboy welcomes all connotations. The bar's name conjures local versions of John Wayne: rugged, quiet types moseying and smoking under the open sky and sippin' their whiskey neat. But it could just as well adhere to the new brand of Brokeback boys, manicured dudes who text and dance on the disco floor and quaff cosmos on teal vinyl couches, unmoved by the friendly... More »
