Close by the Bluebird Theater, the Atomic Cowboy has morphed from a late-night, post-concert fave into an all-day jack-of-all-trades spot. Two food purveyors inhabit the bar: From early in the morning into the afternoon, the Denver Biscuit Company cranks out biscuit sandwiches and platters for the local workforce; starting at lunch, Fat Sully's bakes greasy, huge pizza slices and pies for dine-in, takeout or delivery, and continues serving until the wee hours. As for the Cowboy itself, the cavernous joint comes fully stocked with a bi-level bar that features a daily happy hour (as well as daily specials), a trivia night, a few well-placed plasmas, pool tables and a slew of board games.

Well, I like their pizza. However, they demanded my ID so they could scan it. I declined and they refused to allow my wife and myself entry to spend our money at their establishment. I was told it was their policy. My policy is to keep my personal information personal. If getting access to my personal information is more important to this place than a paying customer, I guess I won't be coming back. There are already too many intrusions into our personal lives and I sure as hell am not going to share it with a pizza and beer joint.
This Colfax bar has board games, thin-crust pizza and a great rock-n-roll jukebox (Black Keys to White Stripes and Micheal Jackson to James Brown). Happy Hour goes 'til 700 on weekdays. The crowd can be a couple families around dinner. Later on, it's people in their late 20s thru 30s.
The Atomic Cowboy recognizes that booze brings out your competitive side. Then again, so does every sports bar in Denver with a pool table or a dartboard. But those games require coordination and physical prowess -- two things most of us lack after a couple of rounds of Tanqueray-and-tonics. That's why the Cowboy graciously stocks a selection of board games that even your slumped-over lush of a girlfriend can play with her one functional eye. There are classics like Connect Four, Monopoly,... More »
