Assaggio has stood sentry near the corner of Fourth and Virginia for nearly 20 years, and many of its loyal customers have been coming to the classic Italian-American restaurant since its start, unruffled by the surrounding hood's former unsavoriness or current sophistication. There's no telling how those diners are treated, but Assaggio clearly isn't the mood to cultivate a new batch of regulars: On a recent evening, drinks were forgotten and the pepper mill for the starters still hadn't arrived by the time the entree plates were cleared. Worse, the pasta sauces are dull and the salads are lifeless.
