Description

Dining at Salumi is all about planning. Slump in without preparation and you're liable to stand in the cold for an hour. For the uninitiated, that's not a typo. Armandino Batali's cured meats in overstuffed sandwiches at reasonable prices (hovering around $10 a sammy) are worth the wait. Over the past year, I've identified two surefire ways to get exactly the sandwich you want before they start running out. First, show up an hour before opening (11 a.m. Tues.-Fri.). Look, if you're going to wait around, you may as well not be told they're fresh out of meatballs when you step up. Or wait for heavy rain on a day that's not Friday, because people don't like waiting for the rain. And when they don't want to wait, they don't eat at Salumi-which means that cold, dreary Wednesday is your day for an antipasto platter and a glass of wine.

  • 2010 | Best Non-Sushi Use of Wasabi

The biggest challenge when you lunch at Salumi is not standing in line. (Suck it up and be patient, and you will waddle out of there with a full belly.) No, the biggest challenge is figuring out what to order. But if it's listed among the specials, go for the Marco Polo, especially if you don't mind breaking a sweat. This flavor explosion is built on wasabi-marinated chicken. Prosciutto is piled on, followed by caramelized onions, Mama Lil's hot peppers, and more wasabi. Hot damn! --Lesli... More »

  • 2007 | Best Place to Wait an Hour for a Sandwich

There's really no contest. I don't like waiting for my food, especially if I'm standing in line. But, for very good reason, I'll show up at Salumi during the lunch rush (before noon till after 1), and wait for the better part of an hour till the sandwich hits my paws. It's the cured meat. It's the bread. It's the serving size, fit for two. But after the wait, you'll need it. Yeah, there are times of the day when there's a manageable line-- say, after 2ish. But by then the best stuff is... More »

Though there aren't many artisan cured meat establishments I have visited, I would have to say that this is likely the 'best of the best' for what they offer. A selection of fine cured meats. Personal favorites are the Mole and Finocchiona which are stellar! I haven't been able to enjoy their sandwiches though I do hear from reliable sources that they are divine. Your best bet for times to visit are after 12:30 pm as the lunch crowd - which typically end up extending outside the building - is beginning to die down. Or call ahead if you know what you're after. You can by pass the line and pick up your selections at the counter.
