Arlene's Grocery was converted from a bodega of the same name over a decade ago. It has built oodles of street cred since then, having booked the Strokes pre-fame, hosted the sad Dashboard Confessional guy, and appeared in a Michael Cera movie. Despite (or maybe because of) these neat tidbits, the Grocery isn't frequented by the same show-hounds that attend the Cake Shop and Pianos venues nearby. Hard rock and pop-punk acts tend to dominate the performance space here, but the Grocery's gloomy Butchery Bar (yup, converted from a butchery) still attracts the more general, nomadic L.E.S. crowd on the weekends.
Composed of three siblingsDan, Pat, and Tom Murphyfrom, aptly, the City of Brotherly Love, Penrose vacillates between stomping garage rock and downright dark blues. With impossibly catchy riffs that sprawl headfirst into sludgy breakdowns,... More »
The Real story is well documented but let's repeat it. Suzanne's father, drummer John Criscione, was a member of the Shirts. The Shirts…? I saw the Shirts countless times in the late 1970s, they were the other house band at CBGBs after the Dead Boys, and they opened for everyone, as thankless a task as you will ever get. Sexy and dynamic, and lead by a singer with great pipes.the rhythm section to thrive and they sound like 1965 Watts and Wyman: it is as if everything is being channeled with lazer precission for the common good, to the urge to rock you hard and long. Today, most of the city's hip karaoke joints offer a single, not all that social, option. You rent a room, usually for about 10 bucks per hour per person, and you and your friends pile inside, order drinks or BYO, and sing your hearts out in front of the small crowd. With the right people--and the right selection of '90s pop and mid-'80s cheese metal on the jukebox--it can be pretty fun. But it also gets expensive, and there's nothing quite like embarrassing yourself in front of... More »
Men in ripped T-shirts covered with obscenities, women with hair like Slash, angsty twentysomethings preening their mohawks, your average 40-year-old AC/DC fan--all these people are desperate to rock out. Monday nights at ARLENE GROCERY prove that karaoke needn't be catered solely toward the drunk, off-key love-song crowd. Angry but loyal would-be stars carefully select from the slew of metal and punk hits that the cover band promises to perform, along with an outspoken British MC... More »
