I saw Mario Valens and his Backyard Blues Band last night, who simply brought down the house. I looked around and saw nearly the entire club on the dance floor! The hottest songs were Backyard Boogie, The Edge, Backyard Stomp, Pretty Mama, and his brother Ritchie's immortal classics La Bamba, as well as That's my Little Suzy. If LA Weekly music editors knew their LA music history, they would have run a story promoting Mario's obviously genetic musical talents, and the tightness of a band that has played together for over a decade and- a- half. Not only does Valens and Co. get the house rocking, but they do it in Springsteen Style, jamming for hours until the juice runs out. I recommend that when they return to the LA area, folks check them out; you won't be disappointed. Also, ABC was a terrific venue for dancing and listening, the sound was decent and the dance floor was smooth. Service was cheerful and quick. If you love the blues, this is one venue to definitely add to your list. Incidentally, i drove an hour to see this show, and I have friends who were there that drove twice that. It was worth it.
