It's not necessarily the hot dogs themselves that are better at Arbetter. Rather these mild mixed-meat skinless franks are, with their pleasantly inoffensive, neutral nonflavor and noncolor, ideal blank canvases for the three garnish combinations that made Arbetter's rep when this family-run place opened more than 40 years ago. The basic onion/relish dog is nicely tangy, and the sauerkraut/mustard dog, featuring beautifully buttery cooked-all-day tender kraut, is even better. Its rich and flavorful but not overly hot homemade all-meat (no beans) chili topping from an old Arbetter family recipe and a garnish of diced raw onion adds that reassuring subliminal message that diners are consuming a healthful greenish vegetable that doubtless counteracts the menu's cholesterol count -- so hey, have another.
It's all about the chili. order an MOC Hot and be delighted (mustard, onion, chili, and hot relish. AWESOME!!!!!!! Seriously, it's the chili.
Arbetter's Hot Dogs is the place to go for a quick hunger fix. Located in the heart of Westchester, you can find yourself jonesing an American favorite at this family run restaurant. With a simple menu consisting of - you guessed it - hot dogs and fries, you can really let your creativity fly with the selection of toppings, which range from the usual ketchup to - dare I say - chili. It's definitely a great place to grab an inexpensive bite to eat with the whole gang.
JUST ONE OF THOSE PLACES.....THAT IF U LIVE IN MIAMI U GOTTA DO
Family-owned for 37 years, the small, old-timey joint is now run by brothers David and Joe Arbetter, who insist that the chili used on their dogs be made fresh every day, that the buns be pillow-soft, and that the ambiance stay unpretentious. Simple snacks such as the "All Around" (mustard, onions, and relish) are the brothers' forte, and prices are recession-worthy at $2 to $3.05 per sausage. Inside, the place is a throwback to the shakes-at-the-parlor days when the term veggie dog would... More »
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates Americans will eat more than seven billion little red tubes of "specially selected meat trimmings" between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Most will come fluffed in the traditional white hot-dog bun that H.L. Mencken once described as being made "of ground acorns, plaster of Paris, flecks of bath sponge, and atmospheric air." We wouldn't have it any other way, because if there is one thing Americans agree on, it's that we like our dogs... More »
For the 43rd consecutive year, Arbetter's Hot Dogs will not be serving free baked beans "the day after the Boston Red Sox win the World Series." The Sox are an undeniably fine baseball team, and as of this writing have just steamrolled into the... More »
All over New Jersey this time of year, people brave parking-lot-type traffic jams to drive west to the Poconos to see the fall foliage. This is true even of those who live in tree-studded "garden" suburbs like Montclair, where there are plenty of... More »
