Apop Records is an audiophile's wet dream. Upstairs, you'll find the most obscure vinyl, CDs, cassettes, zines, mags, pulp books and VHS tapes around. Downstairs, enter the underworld: This blacked out basement is darker than the Devil's armpit, and the unearthly sounds heard therein can either delight or terrify, and oftentimes, both at once. Camp Concentration is a disorienting trip into the mad underworld of experimental, noise, punk, acerbic rock and everything in between. Don't expect a bar or furniture, those things only distract from the music; the only thing by way of decoration is some chicken wire attached to the ceiling that the crowd can grab when the moshing gets a little out of control.

They say that vinyl is a dead format. Who wants the headache of this big, clunky, fragile thing, so susceptible to the ravages of heat or fingerprints or dust -- not to mention the challenges of purchasing a quality record player? Tapes and CDs are decidedly dead as well, say they, and the eReader is coming for your books next. Physical media is in the past; in the future we will all have iPhones built into our brains with auto-downloads for all of our entertainment needs -- just... More »
Record collecting can be as frustrating as it is rewarding. For every well-preserved circle of vinyl awesomeness, you'll likely sift through hundreds of copies of dog-eared Chicago LPs. (How many albums did those guys put out, anyway?) Thankfully, Apop Records has come to the rescue. Open since 2007, Tiffany Minx and Dustin Newman's ode to esoteric media has quickly become St. Louis' go-to shop for obscure records and CDs that most shops wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Experimental,... More »
Why, hello, gray cat. I see you there out of the corner of my eye, perched atop the broken pinball machine at Apop Records on Cherokee. Your feline eyes dart back and forth, following the flippers of High Speed, Apop's other, working pinball machine. It's a shame you don't know there's a glass pane between you and the balls and flippers you stalk. But it's cuter this way. Apop customers can take a break from digging through bins of vinyl, thumbed-through zines and used books on radical... More »
Located in the musty catacombs below Apop Records in the burgeoning Cherokee district, Camp Concentration is, literally, an underground venue. Such an atmosphere is fitting for the types of the genre-bending, under-the-radar acts that tend to play in the low-lit basement. Everything from seminal noise pioneers to experimental electro and dance-punk outfits can be seen dealing it out for modest but always attentive crowds of teenage loners, young punks, tallboy-sipping twentysomethings and...
