For many years, popular dining and drinking areas of Dallas, from Uptown to Greenville Avenue have had their share of English-style public houses. But, alas, Deep Ellum has never been able to draw a pub within its midst. That is, until Anvil Pub opened in mid- November 2010. Which may explain why -- even on the first weekend of its opening -- the place already had folks from the Deep Ellum neighborhood proclaiming themselves as "regulars." That first weekend, Anvil Pub still smelled of Home Depot, which, coincidentally, is where the family who own and operate the pub bought the supplies needed to build Anvil from the floor up. "Everything but the barstools, the chairs and the metal table bases," came from there, owner Josh Bridges said, while pouring a beer behind the long, dark wood bar. The grease-free "green" kitchen cranks out pub grub ranging from pizzas and wings to "all-natural" burgers from the menu, which boasts lots of vegetarian options.
Just got a text from the Dallas Observer calling this a vegan friendly restaurant. I was excited and promptly went to go check on the menu and then skip on down to happy hour. Well the only vegan thing I saw on the Dinner menu was a veggie burger. Anything else with veggies had some blend of dairy. Bruschetta does not need cheese!
Anyway, very disappointing to get a text saying it was VEGAN friendly only to find dishes overloaded with dairy. Figure out what VEGAN means.
Deep Ellum's first pub. It's awesome. Great pizza too!

Stop, hammer time. Not kidding. Stop being lame by counting calories because you ate that "everything" bagel and get to Anvil Pub on Elm Street before you croak. This dish is sublime comfort food: pornographically dripping macaroni and cheese combined with chili. Thhhhat's right. We recommend eating the dish by yourself, sitting alone and near the back just so no one sees you clean the bowl by bringing the whole damn thing to your face. There should be a cheesy frown shape on your forehead.... More »
