Chef Lou Rook's imaginative cooking makes this a castle fit for a king. Specialties such as smoked trout come from Troutdale Farms, but Rook is at his best mixing and matching things such as jumbo lump crab and andouille cakes with chipotle aioli. There's also a wide selection of burgers and sandwiches. The 700-label wine list is a recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

We learned last week that Wine Spectator magazine's 2012 awards for restaurant wine lists would promote Balaban's Wine Cellar & Tapas Bar (1772 Clarkson Road, Chesterfield; 636-449-6700) from its firs... More »
When one thinks of typical Irish fare, rustic russet potatoes often comes to mind. These simple, unassuming spuds have held their place in Irish history through famines, starvation and immigration. Lu... More »
Valentine's Day is TOMORROW, you guys! If you haven't made your dinner reservations yet, you must be screwed, right? (Or not screwed, as it were.) Fear not! Gut Check's perusal of OpenTable has foun... More »
The wine program at Annie Gunn's features the talents of not one, but two of St. Louis' most decorated wine pros: Glenn Bardgett, who was nominated for a James Beard Foundation Award this year for his work; and John Cain, former sommelier at Truffles (another restaurant with a top-notch list). So, yeah, Annie Gunn's is a place where you can splurge, and once you've perused the nearly 40-page list, reading the smart, passionate and occasionally humorous descriptions of each bottle, you'll be... Look, we know: Annie Gunn's is great at a lot of things. We've sung the praises of chef Lou Rook. We've given the place Best Steak House in an earlier iteration of this annual STL love-fest. Wine Spectator continually gives the Chesterfield eatery's impressive list its Award of Excellence. The burger is a visitor from Planet Delicious; there should be a tender ballad composed for the Muscovy duck confit. But today we come to laud Annie Gunn's superlative bar. Anyone who's ever dined at the... More »
It's not your "typical" steak house, not the kind of place you get dressed up for, aiming to do some wallet-lightening wining and dining. On second thought, plan on some wallet-lightening wining and dining. Just leave your sport coat or little black dress at home, because Annie Gunn's is much more pub than club. AG's takes its meats seriously -- right down to the on-premises Smoke House Market, where meats are cured, dry-aged and hand cut. If you don't have a reservation, securing a table... More »
Awesome find - open late (5 am I believe) and serving great authentic tacos (al pastor and cabeza were both good). A lot of items on the menu that you don't find at your typical Midwestern Mexican restaurant. Chips were hot and fresh, salsas were good - a go to spot on Southwest Blvd.
...Annie was OK...strange for them as they are usually top notch! I forgive you Annie and will return to see if maybe you had a bad day. Otherwise, this is the best slab of bloody meat in this city. Do not think twice, get it medium rare...bathe it in its blood and rejoice that you are not a vegetarian (how can they live?)
