Steaks and cigars? This is the theme at Angelo and Maxie's, where there's a la-di-da tobacconist just inside the front door. There's also a giant, unraveling cigar next to the maitre d's stand, and a glass-walled room in the rear where patrons actually puff between bites. The 14-ounce filet mignon proved one terrific hunk of meat, with its fine-grained texture, lubricating halo of bearnaise, and dry-aged flavor. Oddly deficient was the signature steak--a 24-ounce stringy rib-eye. If you need to appetize, go for the gravlax, salty and caper-blown. The sides were as good as the filet: a tumbleweed of shivered onion rings; a firkin of garlicky spinach, sautéed rather than creamed; and decent hash browns.
