New ice cream shops are opening all of the time, especially ones that focus on local ingredients and ecologically conscious (hormone-free milk, cage-free chicken eggs) recipes, but Prospect Height’s Ample Hills Creamery sets itself apart with its always-changing, always-great flavors. The menu is always in flux, but a few choice items are the Beer Muncheez, which is a sweet cream ice cream with beer and cheddar cheese bites, and Cookie Au Lait, which pairs New York’s own Irving Farm espresso with sandwich cookies in a coffee-flavored ice cream. All the flavors – usually around 24 at a time – are available as sundaes, milkshakes, and floats, and custom ice cream cakes are available through online, phone, or in-store order. What’s more, the employees at the small shop are usually more than happy to offer samples of all the flavors, and customers are welcome to have as many flavors as they can fit into whatever type of cone or cup they choose. --Shane Barnes

That said, Ample Hills Creamery's Salted Crack Caramel ice cream is eminently deserving of its name, thanks its great reserve of salty, toasted caramel flavor and the sedimentary deposits of milk-chocolate-enrobed saltines concealed in its creamy depths. It's a perfect... More »
There's a reason that Ample Hills Creamery sold out of all of its ice cream within its first four days of business, and a reason that it's still selling out of its salted crack caramel. It is indeed habit-forming, thanks to its great reserves of salty, burnt-caramel flavor and the sedimentary deposits of sugar-coated saltines and milk chocolate chunks buried in its depths. Impeccably creamy in texture, each scoop is like a bomb lobbed toward any measure of self-restraint. 623 Vanderbilt... More »
