Description

Come hear a band you should probably know about amidst thousands of CDs you should probably own at Amoeba's regular in-store concerts. A head-scratching variety of genres offers an awesome cross-section of today's music. Sound quality may suffer, but hey, such is indie rock.

There aren’t many record stores left as we all know, but Amoeba is great. I can spend hours in here. You can find old live concerts of bands you didn’t even know had live shows out. You can get DVDs and documentaries. I just went and bought a lot of Radiohead stuff here last month.

  • 2007 | Best Record Store

The idea of "big box store" gets a bad rap, assuming that a consumer outlet is bad just because the place is cavernous, packed with a dizzying selection of merchandise, and made of unadorned concrete. Ninety-nine percent of the time huge stores do suck, whether because they're full of things no one needs, or because they're screwing their employees, or because those employees could give a shit about helping you find what you're really looking for. Amoeba, which has existed in the Bay Area... More »

  • 2005 | Best DVD Selection

Amoeba's already known far and wide for its amazing array of LPs, CDs, 45s, and other musical forms, but equally impressive is its huge selection of DVDs. New, used, rare, and out-of-print titles are bought and sold by the thousands each week, keeping the turnover lively and the assortment fresh. And such an assortment it is: everything from westerns, musicals, and noir to cult animation, silents, and the collected oeuvre of Russ Meyer, all carefully organized, alphabetized, and maintained... • 2005 | Best Place to Buy 45s and 78s

Most people have never even seen a 78 -- that old-style record once pressed in multiple colors, shapes, and sizes -- unless they happen to have musical pack rats for grandparents. And there are a great many who think a 45 is a gun rather than a 7-inch record that's still a favorite of indie punks. But at Amoeba, where there are hundreds of thousands of records, CDs, videos, and DVDs ripe for the pillaging, you can see 45 and 78 rpm vinyl discs by the bucketful. It's not immediately obvious... • 2004 | Best Vinyl Staples

The pristine reputation of Amoeba is no secret to Bay Area music lovers; the shelves of new and used goodies and the encyclopedically knowledgeable staff have made the place internationally renowned. But check this out: Way down below the racks of good music you really want are piles of used $1 records that you should own. These dusty little nuggets make the perfect staples for a record collection that will impress all your friends and potential mates -- they are the keys to the cred... More »

  • 2001 | Best Place to Buy Embarrassing Albums

Let's say you want to purchase a CD that is generally considered to be less than hip -- Billy Joel's The Nylon Curtain, for instance. Or maybe you've just discovered Fatboy Slim, three years after the rest of your peers, and you don't want anyone to know just how behind the times you are. Perhaps your barely teenage nephew's birthday is coming up and he desperately wants the new Mariah Carey record (for her singing abilities, natch). For you, trudging up to the counter of your local record... More »

  • 2000 | Best Place to Exchange Your Tuneage

Here's the situation: You've got a whole bunch of old Van Morrison CDs from an era in which you worshipped the man, but you don't listen to them much anymore. Adding to that storage problem, there's a stack of old rockers gathering a layer of dust on your bookshelf, along with some stuff friends gave you that you never really liked in the first place. And that's not to mention those Christmas albums from some party way back when. Grab them all and head on down to Amoeba, whose helpful staff... More »
