Located on a busy stretch of Ventura Boulevard, the parking at Amir’s Falafel isn’t ideal. But every neighborhood has at least one Middle Eastern fast-food spot, and this Studio City standby has been the go-to for patrons on-the-go since the early ‘80s. You’ll find the typical Middle Eastern sandwiches, from crunchy falafel to seasoned shawarma and kabobs to eggplant (hamburgers, too, for anyone unaccustomed to eating meat off a skewer or rotisserie). Manlier appetites can try tackling a veggie or meat plates served with pilaf and not one, but four, salads. The cubed and glossy-looking carrot salad tossed with spices smells as good as it tastes. If you’re ambivalent, don’t punish yourself. You can always make a meal out of classic appetizers like hummus dip and pita, tabbouli, grape leaves and burekas – those warm, flaky Filo dough puffs stuffed with either cheese or spinach.
The falafel balls at Amir's Falafel are delicate and crunchy; the hummus divine. But the dish that really sings is the carrot salad. Yes -- the carrot salad. Cubed and sublime orange morsels in a subtle glaze of spice that should remain a mystery. It's like rooty ambrosia in your mouth. It has a lovely scent, too. One might be tempted to dab a piece behind one's ear – would that be so wrong?--Libby Molyneaux More »
