Though just a stone’s throw from trendy Old Town Pasadena, the Altadena Ale & Wine House functions more like a comfy neighborhood pub than a rowdy sports bar. Owner and British expat Judah Casburn (former owner of Pasadena mainstay Lucky Baldwins) and his wife Gail opened the local dive in 2010, creating an atmosphere that’s conducive to conversation, playing pool or watching a quiet game on TV. The food is simple – mostly pizza, cheese plates and chips you can snack on while drinking from the list of nearly a dozen draft beers, including English ales, domestic and Belgian beers, as well as a lengthy list of mostly-French wine. The owners have not only been Altadena residents for more than two decades, but Gail Casburn even ran for a seat on the Altadena City Council; a great way to give back to the community, twice.
