Dear Mr. Gold: My parents are coming to visit, very parenty parents, and I was wondering if you have any idea where I might take them for dinner in Echo Park or Highland Park on a Saturday night. I want to show them my neighborhood, but I’m... More »
Affordable small plates, cocktails + wine! It was to our surprise and relief to discover that Allston Yacht Club wasn't actually a yacht club, but a great little restaurant and bar in Echo Park. It's the perfect place to grab a bite to eat before a show at The Echo or before continuing our night along Sunset Blvd. The menu is really interesting, a mish-mash of global/Pan-Asian small plates at about $5-$9 each, ideal for ordering a good spread and sharing with friends. (Psst, we typically average about 3 plates per person.) Our favorites so far are the duck confit (shredded duck atop crispy toasts, goat cheese and fig), braised shortribs, fried feta with fresh tomatoes, cedar-plank salmon, shrimp & feta gratin and the bacon and egg salad. Drink-wise, you cannot go wrong with any number of the special house cocktails there. GET THE JALAPENO MARGARITA!! So icy cold refreshing but with a nice kick for you heat-seekers. And come on Wednesday nights where all the plates are just $5 with $15 bottles of wines all night or you can also come in any other night between 5:30 and 7p.m. for the $5 deals, too! The staff is friendly and laid-back and the crowd is diverse and lively. AYC is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, it's nice to have some solid go-to spots in Echo Park. Oh, there's also a semi-hidden back patio (ask for it!) area for smokers and anyone who wants to enjoy cocktails outside. Parking is a bit of a pain in that area, best bet is to try the pay & park lot (cheap or free after 9 p.m. I think?) just a block away from AYC, behind the two-story buildings off Echo Park Ave/Sunset.
