Alfred's Steakhouse

Tucked down an alleyway on the edge of Chinatown, this venerable San Francisco steakhouse (est. 1928) is all red-on-red bordello elegance inside, with thick drapes, gilded chandeliers, plush leather booths, and starched napery, but the ambience is warm and convivial in the classic S.F. tradition. The steaks are corn-fed Midwestern beef, aged four weeks and grilled over mesquite, and the garlicky, anchovy-laden house Caesar has to be the best in the city. Make sure to have a predinner martini or old-fashioned at the gorgeous ebony and mahogany bar.
