  • Description

“I paint with shapes,” said the American artist Alexander Calder, referring to his brightly colored moving sculptures that Marcel Duchamp dubbed “mobiles.” Now head to the Whitney Museum to see his masterwork “Calder’s Circus,” which is on display as part of the museum’s exhibition “Singular Visions.” Created in Paris from 1926 to 1931, the miniature circus features movable acrobats, tightrope-walkers, and sword-swallowers made with simple materials such as cardboard, yarn, and bottle caps.
