Middle Eastern food served in authentic style and setting with great politeness and efficiency. This cuisine has simple basics -- chicken, lamb, bulgar wheat, minimal vegetables and fruits -- but oh what a few exotic spices and clean preparation can do. Start with the kibi, crispy shells of cracked wheat stuffed with pine nuts, beef, onions, and spices including cumin, and then deep-fried. Go on to the shawerma ($7.99), the Middle Eastern version of the Greek gyro. There are familiar dishes for the timid, but you'll be pleasantly surprised at the "cleanness" of the preparation and even happier with the desserts -- wondrous, delicate pastries full of surprises. Before you leave, don't miss the Middle Eastern grocery next door, complete with hookahs, abayehs, and a bidet.
Obama is speaking in Cairo, even quoting verses from the Qur'an, glad-handing Arab leaders, and no doubt settling down for intimate talks with King Abdullah II over a pot of Turkish coffee and some sticky pastries loaded with pistachios. And... More »
Could there be a more inviting place in town than al-Salam? Maybe, but you'd probably have to hop a plane to Jeddah to compete with the hospitality at this Saudi restaurant/grocery located on the northeast corner of University Drive and Sunrise... More »
Masha'Allah! Look at all the selections. Of course you have all your fantastic, hard-to-get Middle Eastern foods and drinks. Crackers, snacks, packaging with funny pictures and words you may or may not understand -- but love all the more. But the best reason to go to Al-Salam is its amazing selection of hookahs and hookah... More »
To embrace Middle Eastern culture is to learn to enjoy overeating. Liberate yourself from those blindered Western values by throwing on a flowing, figure-concealing thobe and heading for this cultural island out west. The menu and service at al-Salam epitomize Middle Eastern generosity and hospitality in spirit, if not in the exact details; rather than press upon you a roasted filet of camel, Salam's gracious servers ply you with familiar Mediterranean dishes and a few scrumptious things... A phalanx of ornate hookahs keeps a stately vigil atop the pastry display case in this spacious Middle Eastern restaurant. They're an eye-catching bunch -- blue and green glass bowls, brass and silver stems, curlicued tubes resembling spotted goat tails. Purely decorative, they add a certain je ne sais quoi to this strip-mall eatery, but the restaurant's extensive menu stands on its own. By no means pass up one of the half-dozen hummus appetizers. Al-Salam whips chick peas and tahini (a... More »
