Silver Lake's Moroccan-themed gay grotto is a long-running fave, as much for its stiff, reasonably priced drinks as for its vivacious, open-to-all atmosphere. When the adjacent dance room was added a few years ago, it became a full-fledged club. The dark and sweaty pit pumps and pulsates on weekends thanks to dynamic electro/disco mixes from local DJs. Expect a bevy of boho bi and gay grinders in the mix mostly on weekends, and local of all ilks during the week - even crafters (!), who take over with an early gathering every Wednesday.
Full Frontal Disco Akbar, 4356 W. Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake, Sat., April 6, 10 p.m. - 2 a.m., $5 The population of Silver Lake isn't nearly as poseur-heavy as you might have been led to believe. F... More »

Gay nightlife in Los Angeles might seem like it's separated into two distinct camps -- WeHo on one side and Silver Lake on the other -- but the truth is, plenty of queer and queer-loving crowds hit bo... More »
Belated Valentine's-themed celebrations offer some sweetness to the club scene this week. On Saturday, eat up the eye candy at Cake, a new disco night in a new venue (the Asbury in MacArthur Park). DJs Eric Adams and Phyliss Navidad offer... More »
Akbar continues to be a top-notch stop for barhoppers -- straight and gay alike -- nearly 16 years after opening. The exotic spot always has great music pumping, whether from top-notch DJs in the dance room or the killer jukebox in the loungey bar area. There's a cool staff, potent cocktails and a central location with plenty of parking in the neighborhood. For these reasons it's a spot of choice for shows from promoters like drag diva Miss Barbie-Q (Shhhh!), Mario Diaz (Full... More »
It was one of those nights. Me and my favorite lonely single girlfriend wanted to practice our dance moves with abandon. Real abandon, the kind that is inadvisable when cute, straight guys might be watching. But where to go? Outside of Ryan Heffington's dance classes, there's only one dance floor in Silver Lake where girls, biological and otherwise, can truly boogie down; where the DJ cranks Depeche Mode like it's 1987; where a bona fide disco ball casts glitter light at your twinkle toes;... There is a plethora of stand-up nights in L.A., but few cater to the queer crowd like the weekly show Drunk on Stage. Located inside a small space in Akbar, a laid-back, unpretentious bar in Silver Lake, talented queer and queer-friendly comics perform every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. before a welcoming crowd. The dimly lit, Arabian-themed room makes you feel like you’re watching comedy in some intimate dive in Dubai. Bruce Daniels hosts the show and often mentions, during his opening... More »
Akbar stands as a monument to everything that's right and good about the gay-bar scene. Opened on December 31, 1996, by co-owners Scott Craig and Peter Alexander, the jukebox offers everything from Gram Parsons to Vampire Weekend, while the bar attracts a wide variety of hot guys and gals who chill out, drink a few beers and possibly make out in the back. Elitism is not a vibe that runs through Akbar, and its customers seem to know it. The place feels like a neighborhood bar rather than a... More »

every mondays is Ska and rocksteady nite and drinks are cheap and music is awsome .People are so friendly and cool .
This is my favorite little Gay Bar in the LA area. On Fridays and Saturdays they have a good mix of 80's and current music. They have a lounge on the side when you walk in, and a dance floor on the other that is separated so that you can have conversation or shake your ass. It does get crowded on the weekends, but I don't feel like the crowd is as pretentious as some of the gay haunts in the area.
