Ahmed Alsoudani: "Redacted" Recommended

advertisement

  • Description

Before Ahmed Alsoudani took the contemporary art world by storm, he grew up in Iraq, lived in Syria as a refugee, and fled to the United States where he was granted asylum. His young life experiences were heavily surrounded by violence and consequences of violence -- themes reflected in his large-scale works.

Now New York-based, the painter works in acrylic and charcoal, and his canvases are often tangles of characters and colors and fragments that Phoenix Art Museum curators describe as “a powerful testament to his desire to create eloquent artworks that ask vital questions about our place in the world amid ever changing international circumstances.”

Alsoudani shows 21 paintings he’s created since 2010 in the exhibition “Redacted,” on view through Sunday, July 7, at 1625 North Central Avenue. While they aren't culturally grounded, the works speak to worldwide issues and address a global audience.
