Agnanti, right off Astoria Park, is not your typical hummus-and-lamb Greek restaurant. Sure, those guys are there – along with dolma, yogurt, and plenty of feta cheese – but the authentic menu is made up mostly of enough ys and ks to let you know it’s the real deal: Kolokythokeftedes Mykonos (zuccini and cheese croquets) comes just before Tomatokeftedes (tomato and herb croquets), and both are renditions of the Greek classics. Throw in the saganaki, souvlaki, and a feast of seafood, and Agnanti is great place to find authentic Greek places in the city. Add the cozy atmosphere and casual vibe --along with a staff all too willing to help newcomers--and the off-the-beaten-path location becomes a non-issue. --Shane Barnes
Saganaki is another way of saying "baked or fried cheese," which is another way of saying "inherently delicious." At Astoria's Agnanti Meze, the saganaki are about the size of softballs and come three to a plate, surprisingly wrapped in phyllo dough, making them one of the city's most unapologetic gutbombs.
