Now that the Zeitgeist attracts more fixie hipsters (and slumming Marina types) than bikers, Ace Cafe has stepped up to become the neighborhood's primary meeting place for motorcycle racing enthusiasts. The theme here is 100% cyclerific: photos of vintage cafe racers, old engine parts on the shelves, even motorcycle movies and events on the TV. The CD juke is stocked with well-chosen classic rock, Mod, punk, country, and other nuggets, while the surprisingly good food justifies a separate eating area in the rear.
When it comes to fish and chips, there are two nonnegotiables. One: The breading must have crunch. Two: The fish must have tenderness. It also helps immensely if the chef is British, and even more so if the chef is Henry Dombey or his protégé, Daven Hayes.
