Description

Just south of downtown Dallas, Absinthe Lounge is one of several watering hole options. But there's something delightfully sinister about Absinthe. For one, the drink of the same name only recently became legal in the United States, and Absinthe Lounge takes great pride in the way it serves it. There's a whole ritual involved: the pour, melting the sugar, and adding the water from a specialized dispensary that looks, much like the rest of the bar, like it came from 19th century France. The lighting is low and smoky, which may or may not come from the cigars sold behind the bar.

Getting out of the parking lot at The Palladium or Gilley's following a packed concert is like sitting in a traffic jam on LBJ Freeway, except your ears are ringing and the other drivers are drunk. But if you aren't in a hurry to get home—and that's probably a moot point anyway, considering the traffic—Absinthe Lounge is within stumbling distance of the venue. The club is host to jazz or acoustic live music on most nights, offering a relaxing way to wind down after a loud rock show, and overstuffed couches in a cozy, dark bar are a relief after a standing-room-only show.

Quirky bar in the depths of South Side on Lamar, with real absinthe prepared right in front of you. The owners' teenage daughter and friend spin a terrific set on Friday nights.

  • 2005 | Best Place to Drink the Most Disgusting Drink Ever

Like most good college students, we had a raucous four months studying abroad in Europe where we discovered nude beaches, smoking indoors and the "green fairy," absinthe. So when we heard about the Absinthe Lounge over on Lamar Street, we were skeptical. Since the real stuff is illegal in the States, the folks there have to brew up a watered-down version made from a less potent kind of wormwood. The drink itself has few, if any, redeeming qualities. It's expensive, it won't alter your... More »
