Saucisson and homemade potato salad dressed with red onion oil; pan bagnat (sort of a salade niçoise on a crunchy-crusted baguette); and, especially, crepes, both sweet and savory: This was the kind of old-fashioned French fare that expatriate American artistes of the 1920s ate, in the home-away-from-home Parisian cafés they frequented. And today's starving South Beach artists can do the same (at budget prices; most dishes are in the $4 to $7 range) at this tiny, informal, and authentic-feeling French creperie-plus run by some expatriates from Toulouse. Try the tasty buckwheat Dijonnaise crepe (chicken and potatoes in mustard cream sauce) followed by a sweet sugar/lemon juice dessert crepe topped with whipped cream. And the substantial "total" (ham, egg, mushroom, and cheese) really is a complete crepe-wrapped breakfast.

Picture it: a steaming fresh beurre-sucre crêpe, dripping sweet, sugary butter all over your plate, served under a shaded tree in front of a warm orange-hued storefront on Española Way. Pedestrians stroll past as myriad savory scents waft by. How's $3.50 sound for that slice of delicieux Parisian life? At A La Folie, it's waiting for you every morning. Another $3 buys the freshest strawberries on South Beach for your crêpe, and a few bucks more brings you handmade caramel... More »
This charming crêperie replicates the design of a classic French café: the tile floors, the long wooden benches along the walls, lots of reading material lying about, and good, strong java. If the weather were cooler, one could easily picture a professorial type in corduroys perusing Le Monde over his afternoon espresso. Locals and tourists alike flock for the delicious savory and sweet crêpes, along with other simple fare like croque monsieur (the Gallic version of... More »
