In a space that's as pretty and comfortable as a friend's living room, partners Ilene Rosen and Sara Dima run a cozy haven of rustic food and friendly service. Belly-warming bowls of mussels steamed in a grassy broth of parsley, spinach, and cilantro are worth the effort of extracting them from their shells. Other winners include a golden rotisserie chicken served with yogurt and spicy watercress, or Faccio's pork sausage with an accompanying tomato-bread salad. In warm weather, there's a spacious patio to enjoy those reasonably priced cocktails. And though they call themselves R&D, this charming neighborhood spot has already hit its stride.

No one does mussels like Ilene Rosen of 606 R&D in Prospect Heights. The small, wild mussels from Long Island are simmered in a bright-green liquor of cilantro, parsley, dill, and spinach, then served with grilled bread from Grandaisy Bakery. It's a salty, buttery mess that reminds us how flavorful mussels can really be. 606 Vanderbilt Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-230-0125, 606vanderbiltbklyn.com (11238) More »
