This is one of the best examples of a good old-fashioned diner we have in the city. Here you'll find lots of chrome and pleather and a lunch counter where you can sit while watching the food being prepared. Great breakfasts are served all day long, and there's comfort food for lunch and dinner. The daily Blue Plate Specials include perennial favorites like pot roast, turkey and gravy, catfish and roast pork. Traditional floats, malts and milkshakes alone are enough to make the trip here worthwhile.
Right now we feel like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park. We could have told everyone this disaster was going to happen. Maybe not as quickly and drastically as it did, but with so many butterflies flapp... More »
Like so many homeless people and recently released inmates, we're going to stick mostly around downtown and Midtown this week. And we'll start with a citation -- Deli Deluxe (1600 Smith/tunnel) got a ... More »
As I now live very close to both an Amy's Ice Cream and a 59 Diner, the temptation to get ice cream during the evening is hard to resist. On a recent Sunday I was in the mood for structure and formal... More »
This week's inspection reports were heavy on recognizable inner-Loop places, most of which did fine. The most upscale place among that group, however, earned the most violations. We'll get to that aft... More »
The calendar may claim it's fall, but you can't fool Houstonians. Here, autumn is merely an extension of summer, disguised as months appropriately named after ascending Roman numbers, like you're clicking off months on a prison wall. Seven eight... More »
I'm a native Houstonian and the 59 has been a place for burgers, hand-turned shakes and malts as well as a good diner breakfast. It's been a couple years since I'd been there, so when my Mom asked me to take her for a cheeseburger I jumped at the chance.
A mistake. The diner was only 2/3 full but understaffed. We waited almost 10 minutes before we got drinks. Originally, the menu, (one for breakfast another for the rest of the day) was a simple, single fold. Now the menu is four, front and back pages. There are about six type of burgers and three buns.
We ordered basic cheese burgers with fries. It took the kitchen nearly 30 minutes to get them out. To say when we were disapointed when the burgers arived would be an understatement. The cooks slopped them on the plate and cut them without paying attention, resulting in a sloppy mess. Romaine is a lousy choice for a burger, it came out slimy. The tomato was green and the hunk of cheese wasn't melted, resulting in a greasy blob.
But worst of all was the so-called meat. It was tipid and the texture was funky. Honestly it was like the soy patties they sell at Sam's Club. Even without the ciabatta bun, my Mom had difficulty chewing the cheeseburger and ultimately settled for eating the fries. Neither of us finished the cheeseburgers.
If you're in Houston and someone suggests The 59 Diner, insist on Pappas instead or Champ's or for that matter McDonald's. The 59 was once something special. Now it's just an irritating disappointment.
People put a lot of faith in the cooks, servers and busboys who work at their favorite diner. Patrons want to know that when they place their order and get their meal, they're in good hands. They wanna look in that waitress's eyes and know they have nothing to worry about -- not just with their dining experience, but with everything in general: the state of the world, the weather, their financial woes And the decent, all-American waitresses at the 59 Diner are in your corner. They make... More »
Solace and comfort can be found in the chicken pot pie from the 59 Diner, but be sure to bring a healthy appetite, since the serving is substantial. As you break through the crispy biscuit crust, allowing the steam to dissipate, you'll reach plenty of chunks of white chicken meat along with corn, peas and green beans, all in a thick, gelatinous clear sauce. For $6.59, you also get your choice of three side dishes, such as old-fashioned mashed potatoes with cream or brown gravy, corn bread... More »
