This laidback, come-as-you-are bar has been around since 1952. It's changed ownership a few times, and if you visited back in the day you'll notice that it's expanded just a bit. The brick walls and parquet wood bar are still there, along with numerous trophies won from pool leagues. Most of the patrons are regulars, and you may notice the bartender calling out your name with your choice of drink waiting if you're one of them. In 2010, City Pages dubbed it the best place to meet single gay men -- but it's certainly not a 'meat market' kind of place, so no skinny jeans necessary. 19 Bar doesn't cater to any specific demographic, so you'll likely find an overall feeling of being welcome once inside.
The 19 Bar in Loring Park has been part of the GLBT community for more than 60 years, predating Stonewall and the start of the gay rights movement by decades. It retains the charm of a neighborhood hangout, rather than being an ultra-slick facility intended only for the hard-muscled beautiful people. Instead, you have a place that advertises, above everything else, its strong beer ($7.50 a pitcher during happy hour). There are also tournament-level pool tables (with actual tournaments the... The key word to this category is "meet." That can be hard to do at some gay clubs--hell, any nightclubs--around town. It's hard to meet a nice dude when strobe lights are giving you an acid flashback, and screaming over loud music can only be so sexy. The 19 Bar is ideal for actually interacting with single men. You won't find a disco ball or pounding dance anthem here, but you will save money on body glitter and be able to hear people talk. The chances for casual, friendly... More »
This dark, unassuming Loring Park watering hole has been around since 1953, purportedly making it the oldest gay bar in the Twin Cities. The 19, however, defies all gay stereotypes. The bleary environs boast the finest pool tables in town, dartboards, pull tabs, and a jukebox with a diva quotient only slightly higher than most around town. It also has prices that wouldn't get you a glass of water at most downtown clubs. (A mug of Blue Moon for $2.50, anyone?) In other words, it's just a damn... More »
In the Queer Eye era--one of exfoliation, aromatherapy, seaweed wraps, etc.--some on the outside might forget that not every gay man in America wants his bikini line waxed. In fact, every queer guy could use a little straight eye once in a while, and that's where the 19 Bar comes in. Established in 1952, this little watering hole a couple of blocks east of Loring Park has all the best attributes of a workingman's (and drinkingman's) joint. The oldest running gay bar in the city has three... More »
After a few decades of selling 3.2 beer, this hole in the wall near Loring Park--reputed to be the city's first gay bar--recently upgraded to a full liquor license. And the jukebox is a gem. For seductive barroom tableau, you can't beat dialing up "Maggie May" and bending over one of the room's 75-cent pool tables for a corner-pocket shot. Compared to the perennial downtown meat markets, the 19 Bar presents a relaxed--if a bit tacky--alternative: The drinks are cheap, the atmosphere is... More »
